Victor Cruz Suffers Setback During Giants Practice

The New York Giants had some bad luck at practice today, as Victor Cruz suffered a setback in his calf injury. Cruz was forced to leave practice early Wednesday as he had a recurrence from the calf injury that has kept him out since midway through August.

Not being able to make it through individual workouts puts a damper on Cruz’s chances to take the field this week against the Buffalo Bills. If he cannot make it through a full practice, there is no way the Giants would endanger his health more and put him on the field for a game.

Cruz originally was working his way back from a patellar tendon injury that he suffered in Week 6 of the 2014 season against the Philadelphia Eagles. He had to undergo major surgery after that, and was looking good progressing throughout the spring. But, Cruz injured the calf in the opposite leg about halfway through August. He has been sidelined since, but looked to be making progress last week as he began running on grass. But, he has suffered another setback today and it looks like he will be out for a little while longer.

This was the Giants easing Cruz into action, as the game plan all along was to take their time with Cruz in hopes of him getting on the field Sunday against the Bills. It is something that the Giants will have to try again maybe next week, as it seems unlikely that Cruz will be making his 2015 debut in Week 4 against the BIlls.

With Cruz seemingly sidelined again, look for the Giants to try and get Rueben Randle going again like they did last week against the Washington Redskins. What to watch though will be who mans the slot until Cruz can return. Last week Dwayne Harris did it some, but was only targeted once in the passing game. The Giants may use Shane Vereen in the slot more also, as Harris didn’t look like much of a receiving threat against the Redskins.

If they Giants do not feel comfortable with Harris doing it, the Giants may opt to use Odell Beckham Jr. or Randle in the slot, or just go with heavier two tight end sets. Whatever the Giants decide to do, it does not look like Cruz will be a part of that game plan for at least another week.
