The New York Giants put together a solid effort all around on Thursday night to pick up a much needed victory over the Washington Redskins. It had the feel of a preseason game at times, like many of the Thursday night games are, but the Giants were able to pick up their first win of the season.

It is hard to call a game a must win in Week 3, but this was as close to a must win as you could get for the Giants. They could not afford to fall to 0-3 on the season with two intra division losses already. But, the Giants were able to avoid that scrutiny by defeating the Redskins 32-21.

It was an impressive victory for the Giants, who entered the game extremely shorthanded. Already without Victor Cruz, the Giants offense was without another main piece Thursday, as Ereck Flowers was forced to miss the game with an ankle injury. The defense was not without losses either, as Robert Ayers and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie were both on the sidelines as well. Those losses were in addition to Owa Odighizuwa, who has yet to make his NFL debut and Markus Kuhn, who has missed two straight games now.

Despite all of the production and bodies they were missing, the Giants were still able to get enough production from the players they had, as the next man stepped up big time in picking up an important win.

The Giants were able to do just enough to pick up the victory, as they got off to a strong start and were able to control the game from the start. They had enough big plays offensively, and made some timely ones defensively to put away a Redskins team that has been problematic the first two weeks of the season.

The Giants were very much in control throughout the game, and it is reflected in the final score. This was a big game for the Giants as they gained some momentum going into a difficult matchup in Orchard Park against the Buffalo Bills in Week 4.

Before we get to that though, let’s take a look at some grades for the Giants in their Week 3 victory over the Redskins.
