Jets Receive Good News Regarding Eric Decker’s Knee
The New York Jets and wide receiver received good news regarding his injured knee. According to the MRI results, Decker was able to avoid a season-ending injury that would have required surgery. Decker hinted that the injury is thought to be to his PCL, and is day-to-day with what is being called a knee sprain.
This is the second consecutive week the Jets had a player injure his knee and fear it to be serious and the MRI reveal it is only a sprain. Antonio Cromartie had the scare in Week 1, as he crumbled to the turf in a non-contact injury, fearing a torn ACL. His was only a sprain, and he was able to get back on the field in Week 2 for Monday night’s defeat of the Indianapolis Colts. Will Decker be able to recover that quickly as well?

You won’t be getting an answer out of head coach Todd Bowles, who is playing it close to the vest regarding Decker’s injury and potential availability. Bowles did give a quote on the situation, saying, “I don’t know; I’m going to have to see how he’s doing later in the week. If he’s not moving well, obviously he’s not going to play. But time will tell. He’s got a little bit of time. I’m hopeful, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility he won’t play.”
Decker suffered the injury early on the fourth quarter against the Colts, but he had already done his damage prior to that. Decker put together one of his stronger games as a member of Gang Green, dominating an undermanned Colts secondary while Vontae Davis battled with Brandon Marshall. Decker took advantage in the first half, catching eight passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. The second half Decker took a backseat to Marshall, who then dominated the Colts secondary once Davis was forced from the game with a concussion.
Decker was relieved that the injury wasn’t serious, but said that he wouldn’t rush things. “I’m going to be smart about it this time. I’m not going to rush myself. Obviously, I want to be out there as soon as possible, but we’re going to take the proper steps.” Decker played most of last season through a troublesome hamstring injury, hampering his performance at times. This time around, it sounds like Decker is willing to sit to ensure the injury heals properly.
Decker was not the only receiver to go down against the Colts, as No.3 receiver Chris Owusu also suffered a leg injury. The extend his injury is not yet known, but the Jets are now facing a little bit of a problem at wide receiver.
Quincy Enuwa should get some more reps in place of Owusu in the slot, while we could also see second round pick Devin Smith make his debut after being a healthy scratch the first two weeks. Jeremy Kerley is also still around, but he seems buried on the wide receiver depth chart, only around still to return punts.
Decker could miss a couple of weeks, but even if he does they have some depth to replace him with. That is why, unlike last season, Decker can afford to sit and rest as the Jets have other players they are comfortable using on the field in place of him for a couple of games if they have to.
