New York Giants vs. Atlanta Falcons Week 2 Injury Report

The New York Giants have another game with a high-powered offense this Sunday, as they will welcome the visiting Atlanta Falcons for their home opener. The Giants will be looking to avoid an 0-2 start and get the sour taste out of their mouth from a disappointing Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys; there’s only so much the NFL admitting to blowing not one, but two calls that directly affected the Giants negatively.

But, if they are to avoid losing the first two games of the season, they will have to turn their attention to a talented Falcons team. The Falcons picked up a win on Monday Night Football over the Philadelphia Eagles 26-24. While the Falcons are Jekyll and Hyde at home and on the road, they are still a team with a lot of firepower offensively.

It will be another tall task for the Giants defense to slow them down, and they will be doing it without more players this time around. Jon Beason has not been ruled out, but he is listed as doubtful. If he suits up, it would be in a very limited role.

“I want to be available to play as much as I can. A lot of times, just because you feel good coming back from injury, that doesn’t mean you’re ready to play football. God forbid we have to play 80 snaps. I’m not ready for that,” Beason said. That doesn’t sound like a player that will be suiting up Sunday afternoon, as it looks like the Giants will be without their defensive captain at least one more week.

The Giants will have two defenders definitely out for Week 2 in starting defensive end Markus Kuhn and rookie defensive end Owa Odighizuwa. Kuhn will miss the game because of knee injury, while Odighizuwa’s debut will be delayed at least one more week because of a foot injury.

Joining them on the sidelines will be two offensive players; Victor Cruz and Daniel Fells. Cruz has been unable to shake the calf injury he suffered about a month ago and will be out again. He hasn’t even practiced since then, and they are unsure of when he will return. Cruz said that he is feeling better, and when asked when he may be returning to practice, he told reporters when he knows, they will know. Fells is battling a foot injury and it will be interesting to see how the Giants game plan without their blocking tight end.

The Giants did catch a break though with left tackle Ereck Flowers. Flowers injured his ankle in the first half against the Cowboys, but gutted through the remainder of the game never coming out. He was a limited participant earlier in the week, but practiced fully on Thursday and Friday and is listed as probable. He didn’t look overwhelmed in Week 1, which is good for a Giants team that has enough things to worry about.

Uani Unga is also listed as probable. He is battling a knee injury, and was limited earlier in the week like Flowers, but also like Flowers practiced fully Thursday and Friday. While he struggled getting lined up and in pass coverage at times against the Cowboys, the Giants are confident enough in him to start at middle linebacker as long as Beason is sidelined. If Beason is out again, which seems likely, they will at least have Unga to turn to instead of a third-string player.

The Giants will not catch a break from their opponent though, as the biggest name on their injury report, Julio Jones, is listed as probable. Also probable is O’Brien Schofield, William Moore, Jake Matthews and Adrian Clayborn. Malliciah Goodman, Devin Hester and Brooks Reed were all announced out.
