The New York Giants were in great position to pull off an upset opening week against the Dallas Cowboys, but they were unable to get out of their own way in an excruciating defeat. A game that was expected to be an offensive clinic turned out to be a bit of a defensive battle as both teams’ offenses were held relatively in check.

Unfortunately for the Giants, they were unable to hold the Cowboys in check long enough in the fourth quarter, as Tony Romo mounted yet another comeback victory against them in the fourth quarter. While the Giants may have been on the receiving end of some poor calls from the referees, they really have no one to blame but themselves for the loss Sunday night.

More from New York Giants

Poor execution late in the game in all facets of the game is what truly led to the Giants’ demise Sunday night. The offense was never able to truly get going, the defense stepped up a times but crumbled when it mattered most and the special teams had some miscues as well.

Overall for the Giants it was a disappointing opening weekend as they had a chance to pick up an upset victory but come away with the same result they have had the last five season openers; a loss.

Some people will say the Giants came away with a morale victory in Week 1, as they hung with an explosive Cowboys team. But, at the end of the day, they added to their loss column and not their win column; there is only so much a morale victory can do for an NFL team.

They will have to clean some things up to get into the win column against another explosive offense in the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2. But, before we get to that game, we will take an in depth look at the Week 1 game against the Cowboys.

Check out our Giants Week 1 grades against the Cowboys. It may look like the Giants will fail the 2015 season, but at least it is only Week 1 and there is still some time to improve.
