New York Giants Rumors: Jason Pierre-Paul Season In Jeopardy?

facebooktwitterreddit

The New York Giants were heading into the season with huge question marks surrounding top defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. Pierre-Paul, who injured his hand in a Fourth of July incident, was expected to miss some time because of the injury, but there were some rumors this week that he was pushing to play when he reported to the Giants facility. The Giants were already expecting Pierre-Paul to miss a couple of weeks, maybe get on the field by the end of September. That timetable seems to an unrealistic one with the news released recently.

There are many people within the Giants’ organization that believe Pierre-Paul could miss the entire season. That is the case according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, who said that after the team got to examine him Monday fear the damage is much worse off than they were led to believe.

Everyone knows that Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated along with skin grafts and a fractured thumb, but he is also missing a portion of another finger on the hand. That is not what the Giants were hoping for when examining him, as the damage seems to be much worse than they thought coming into the process.

Pierre-Paul supposedly offered to play with a protective device on the injured hand, but that is not something the Giants were fully behind if they were to pay him about $871,000 a game; that is the per game amount Pierre-Paul would be making if he signed the Giants’ franchise tender they placed on him.

There were reports earlier in the week that the Giants and Pierre-Paul were likely going to restructure the deal in some way. The only other option the Giants have in recouping some money is to place him on the NFI list, but that would mean Pierre-Paul would have to sit for the season.

While there is growing concern with what Pierre-Paul will be able to give the Giants this season, there are still some people within the organization that remain upbeat and positive in regards to him getting on the field. According to that same report from Graziano, there were people encouraged by his attitude, demeanor and physical condition outside of the hand.

Pierre-Paul was unable to workout much of the summer because of the hand, but he has been working out on his own in Florida while rehabbing. He has his own group of trainers, doctors and coaches near his home there that he works with to keep in shape. He obviously lost some weight because he was unable to work out for some time, but it is encouraging to see that he was able to stay in shape despite the traumatic experience.

That is one thing people seem to forget is that he did suffer from a serious event. Yes it was poor judgment to do what he did, but his health should be first and foremost before worrying about when he gets back onto the field and what he can bring the Giants.

There is no harm in waiting for the Giants, since they will not have to pay him until he signs that tender. It does not seem that he will sign until he is 100 percent healthy, which at this time no one knows exactly when that will be.

The Giants won’t put Pierre-Paul on the field until they deem him to be 100 percent healthy. No one is quite sure when that will occur, but at this time it looks like Pierre-Paul would be lucky to play in half the season.
