3. Pittsburgh Pirates (79-50) It was a tough week for Charlie Morton, who suffered the only two losses for the Pirates this past week. Other than that, it was business as usual for the Pirates, who went 5-0 the rest of the week, taking series from the Marlins and Rockies. J.A. Happ continues to impress after being acquired at the trade deadline, picking up two wins this week and dropping his ERA with the Pirates to 1.98 in five starts. The Pirates will now embark on a road trip through their division, starting off with the Brewers and Cardinals this week.
2. Kansas City Royals (80-50) The Royals just continue motoring along, as Missouri is where it’s at for baseball right now as the Royals and Cardinals are dominating teams. The AL East was the victims of the Royals this past week, as they took series from the Orioles and Rays. Their lead in the AL Central now sits at a comfortable 13 games, as they are setting their focus on the postseason. Their biggest concern at this point is just keeping their players healthy, and getting guys such as Alex Gordon healthy and ready to go. Also, the Royals have to get Johnny Cueto figured out, as he has been bombed in his last two starts, giving up 13 runs, 12 earned, in 11 innings, including 21 hits and four home runs.
1. St. Louis Cardinals (84-46) The Cardinals really picked things up on their trip out west. After losing two of three to the Padres last weekend, the Cardinals lost only once the remainder of the trip; they swept a four-game series from the Diamondbacks and took two of three from the Giants. That is what good teams do; handle business no matter where they are playing. The Cardinals continue to pace the rest of the majors, and a big reason is because of Jason Heyward. He is setting himself up for a monster payday in the offseason. Brandon Moss has also found his stroke, hitting in four straight games, including his first two homers with the Cardinals.
