As expected, recent New York Mets news is that the team will be skipping Matt Harvey’s start on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies.

The one surprising thing was that according to New York Post, this will be the only time the Mets skip a start of Harvey’s.

Harvey was very against the Mets going to a six-man rotation, but he seems to be taking the move to skip his start much better.

“I think it’s a good time,” said Harvey to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

“With the amount of innings we’ve built up and the stretch we have coming up, especially pitching in September and trying to get into October, we all discussed and felt like this was a good time. A little bit of rest never hurts anybody.”

“The last thing you want to do is keep putting it off or waiting to hear when it’s going to happen,” Harvey said to Puma

“The innings are adding up — we have kind of been discussing that the whole time. I told them I was completely on board with whatever they wanted to do. I just kind of preferred it would be sooner rather than later.”

Recently called up Logan Verrett will be making the start on Sunday in place of Harvey.

The Mets have a very young rotation that is going to be entering uncharted waters when it comes to innings pitched. With the future so bright for Harvey it makes total sense to save him a start against an awful Rockies team.

In addition to Harvey having his start skipped, the Mets will also be skipping a Noah Syndergaard start in the near future.

“If we’re going to do it, if this guy is going to get skipped, let’s do it right now,” Collins said to Puma. “We just were afraid we were going to end up maybe having to shut one of the guys or both guys down and we’re not going to do that.”

The plan for the Mets is to go to a six-man rotation in September once again when Steven Matz returns to the rotation. By going to the six-man rotation, the Mets will be able to avoid having to skip starts of Harvey and Syndergaard for the remainder of the season after they each get one start skipped.

With the Washington Nationals struggling, the Mets have some room to breathe for now that they can afford to look to protect their young arms and still maintain a lead in the NL East.
