New York Giants Rumors: Desperate for pass rushing help, could the Giants be interested in signing Aldon Smith, who was released by the San Francisco 49ers following his fifth arrest since joining the league?

Could the New York Giants be desperate enough for pass rushing to bring in the troubled Aldon Smith? Smith, who was released by the San Francisco 49ers Friday following his third arrest, is supposedly garnering interest from a number of teams around the league. According to Jordan Schultz of the Huffington Post, one of those teams is the Giants.

Smith would obviously fill a huge need for the Giants, as pass rushers were something they were looking for before Jason Pierre-Paul had his fireworks accident on the Fourth of July. He earned first-team NFL All-Pro honors after racking up 19.5 sacks in 2012, as he looked to be a premier pass rushing talent.

But, his off-field issues have stunted that growth. He has totaled only 10.5 sacks the last two seasons as he missed 14 games in total. He missed five games in 2013 after entering a rehabilitation center, which seemed like a step in the right direction. But, he was then handed a nine-game suspension in 2014 after violating the NFL’s substance abuse and personal guidelines policies.

This is extremely shocking news to hear, as the Giants normally have a no tolerance policy. Players who are suspended or in trouble with the law rarely last a long time with the Giants; just ask Will Hill, who the Giants released despite his immense talent because he could not stay out of trouble. Hill was a home grown player, someone the Giants signed as an undrafted free agent and watched grow from a special teams player to starting safety and couldn’t make the cut. It is hard to imagine an outside such as Smith getting more of a leash.

Smith has been arrested five times since being the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. It is clear that he needs some type of help, and if the Giants are the team that will try and rehabilitate him while getting production on the field, so be it. It is just hard to imagine a team that has been as strict and straight with their rules in recent seasons would bring in a player with the history of Smith.

There is no doubting the talent that Smith has on the field, but is it worth the headaches and problems he seemingly cannot avoid causing off of it? While the Giants may be interested now, ultimately it would be hard to see them being the team taking a chance on the talented but troubled and in need of help Smith.
