The Yankees have expressed interest in Johnny Cueto of the Cincinnati Reds, and now according to Ken Rosenthal, they have contacted the Philadelphia Phillies about their ace Cole Hamels.

Since the season started, it was known that the Phillies would be sellers come the trade deadline. They had no chance to compete in the National League since the first game of the season, and now a few of their players could be on the move.

Of all of the players on the Phillies, Hamels is certainly the best, and is going to be an impact player if he is traded to a contender.

In 10 seasons, Hamels is 113-90 in the regular season with a 3.31 ERA, and three All-Star appearances. While Hamels’ stats are good in the regular season, when the pressure is on in October, he gets even better. In the postseason, Hamels is 7-4 with a 3.09 ERA in his career. Hamels became a household name in baseball in 2008, when he helped the Phillies win a World Series. He would take home the NLCS MVP Award, and also the World Series MVP Award in 2008.

This season, Hamels is having a down year by his standards, as he is 5-7 with a 3.91 ERA on a very poor Phillies team. A change of scenery may be exactly what Hamels needs to regain his form, as the constant losing isn’t an easy thing on a player.

In order to acquire Hamels, the Yankees are likely going to have to part ways with at least one of the prospects that they don’t want to. Aaron Judge, Greg Bird, and Luis Severino are the three prospects that the Phillies will have the most interest in, and that’s where negotiations will get tough.

Hamels is still owed a lot of money from the contract extension that he was given, which makes giving up top end prospects an even more difficult pill to swallow.

If the Yankees do acquire Hamels, they will be getting a proven playoff pitcher, and also a left-hander who can anchor the top of the rotation with Masahiro Tanaka. The Yankees are in very good shape in the AL East, and it appears that Brian Cashman will be looking to add a great starter for a World Series run.

It will all come down to the price in a deal for Hamels, as the Yankees may be willing to give up some of their better prospects if the Phillies help eat some of his remaining salary.
