New York Yankees: Is the Best Move No Move?

The MLB Trade Deadline is a little more than a week away and the New York Yankees best move is to stay put. Yes, they could push for a top of the rotation starter or a second baseman like Ben Zobrist, but would it be worth it? If I have said it once, I have said it a thousand times: The New York Yankees cannot trade Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, or Gregory Bird. I don’t care if they can get Johnny Cueto, Cole Hamels, or Jeff Samardzija they can’t give up any of their big prospects.

For years, all I heard from analysts, friends, and even strangers, “The Yankees don’t have a farm system,” “Their prospects suck,” “They will never have another star.” Finally, with Severino, Judge, and Bird they have a shot at a star. Aaron Judge is constantly being compared to Giancarlo Stanton and being labeled “The Next Big Thing.” He is a true home run bat, with a crazy amount of potential. The New York Yankees need a new face of their franchise; Derek Jeter is gone and he’s not coming back, so they need someone to fill the void. Judge’s ready time matches up perfectly with when Carlos Beltran‘s albatross of a contract is up. He would perfectly fit into RF in 2017, if not sooner.

Severino is a potential ace. He already looks like a number two or three starter and there has been talks that he could join the Yankees by the end of the year to strengthen the bullpen or even as a starter. Another reason the Yankees shouldn’t make a move at the deadline, as solid addition could come from within.

Finally, despite some others in the AL East saying they will be buyers at the deadline, there is little competition within the division. The Yankees are playing some of the best baseball in the league right now. They just got two of their best players of the DL in Andrew Miller and Jacoby Ellsbury. Those additions are better than anything they can get at the deadline AND they don’t have to give anything up.

The Yankees have a couple of avenues they can pursue. If one of those avenues results in a acquiring a starting pitcher or second baseman for a couple of mid-to-low level prospects, then fine. This avenue is not necessarily a fantasy either. Some have predicted that the market for starting pitchers could become flooded, meaning prices will drop around the league. In this scenario, a trade could be manageable. However, without a price drop, the right call for the Yankees is to stand pat.
