New York Mets Should Promote Michael Conforto This Season

The New York Mets are in desperate need of adding a bat, if not multiple ones to their lineup. Their perceived reluctance to trade one of their prized pitchers may make it difficult to complete a trade, so why not go the next best route and call up one of their top prospects in Michael Conforto.

After going 2-2 and throwing out a runner at the plate in the MLB Futures Game, New York Mets star prospect Michael Conforto is opening up a lot of eyes around the league. The Seattle native looks poised to become an All-Star outfielder, but will New York bring him up this year?

New York recently chose to bring up outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis instead of Conforto. Nieuwenheis returned the favor by going 3-4 with three home runs against the Arizona Diamondbacks a few days ago.

Despite Nieuwenhuis’ big day, the New York Mets corner outfielder core has been struggling mightily at the plate. Michael Cuddyer, who besides not living up to his expectations and contract, is hitting .244 with seven home runs, and is likely heading to the disabled list with knee soreness . Curtis Granderson is batting .243 with 13 home runs. Darrell Ceciliani is batting .206 with one home run, while Eric Campbell is hitting an ugly .174. Not far behind is John Mayberry Jr. at batting .184, and despite his three homer game this past weekend, Nieuwenhuis is batting .146.

All three players have three home runs a piece, so they aren’t providing much power to go with paltry batting averages. To give some perspective, pitchers Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, and Jon Niese all have higher batting averages than Campbell, Niewenhuis, and Mayberry Jr.

It is no secret that New York is in need of offensive help. If Sandy Alderson isn’t going to spend money before the trade deadline to acquire a bat, bringing up Conforto is the next best thing. He’s batting .330 with three homers and 21 RBIs in 37 games at Double-A Binghamton. Alderson has said that Conforto is the “best hitter in the organization,” and its about time the rest of the league knows that. Yes, it is a big jump from Double-A to the MLB, but Alderson and New York did that with Dilson Herrera last year, so it wouldn’t be unfamiliar territory. Conforto is also older than Herrera, as he is already 22 years old while Herrera is currently 21.

If New York wants to bring some excitement to this ball club, and add a bat going into the second half of the season without trading one of their prized pitchers, bringing up Conforto is a good idea.
