New York Giants Rescind Jason Pierre-Paul Contract Offer

The New York Giants and Jason Pierre-Paul saw firsthand the troubles that celebrating the Fourth of July can bring, specifically using fireworks.

Pierre-Paul injured his hand in a fireworks incident over the weekend, sparking a ton of rumors that he had lost fingers or part of his hand. While the full extent of the injury is not yet known, it does not seem that Pierre-Paul’s career is in any danger, or that he will be losing his hand in any way. He did require hospitalization though, and while the Giants are doing their due diligence to receive all the possible information on the incident, they have decided to make a decision regarding a long term contract.

Following the incident, the Giants have decided to rescind the long-term contract offer they had on the table for Pierre-Paul. The $60 million contract offer is no longer available for Pierre-Paul to sign, as the Giants have taken it off the table. They are citing the timing of the incident and lack of judgement apparently used as the basis of a long-term deal not being the right move to make at this time.

There was very little chance that Pierre-Paul was going to sign the long-term contract offer the Giants had on the table, which was expected to pay him around $30 million guaranteed. The Giants were not about to take that chance though, and took the offer off the table. Pierre-Paul is still under the franchise tag though, so that will more than likely be what he plays the 2015 season under with the Giants. The franchise tag is worth $14.8 million this season.

For Pierre-Paul, 26 years old, this is an extremely poor use of judgement. Knowing that his football future was essentially hanging in the balance this year, doing something that could put him in danger such as fireworks has to make the Giants, and really any team in the NFL, question handing Pierre-Paul a long-term contract next offseason.

For the Giants, this is a situation they have gone through previously with Plaxico Burress. During the 2008 season Burress accidentally shot himself with his gun, derailing the Giants’ season that looked very promising. He was released shortly after, and while Pierre-Paul didn’t break laws it seems like Burress did, the Giants have shown in the past they have a low tolerance for poor decisions and will not hesitate to move on from a player.

Even last season, despite huge needs at safety, the Giants released Will Hill because of his constant failed drug tests. If you are going to be a problem in any way to the team or organization, don’t expect to be a part of their long term plans.

Pierre-Paul will have an opportunity to redeem himself this season playing under the franchise tag, but it is fair to question if he will ever receive the long-term contract he is seeking from the Giants after the incident this past weekend no matter how well he plays on the field.
