Cowher is arguably more of a long shot than Mike Holmgren is, but the Jets have never been afraid of the back page, and getting Cowher to leave his job with CBS would garner plenty of attention. Cowher is well respected around the NFL, but it is fair to question if he would be successful in the NFL nowadays after being away from the game since 2006 when he and the Pittsburgh Steelers parted ways.
If they could get Cowher to listen, they could entice him, much like with Holmgren, some general manager responsibilities and the power to bring certain players aboard. Even without the GM designation, someone with a track record like the one Cowher has would have some say in the shaping of the roster.
More importantly Cowher would bring a winning attitude. He has reached the pinnacle of the sport, winning the Super Bowl in 2005. It is an extremely long shot that Cowher takes the job, but it wouldn’t hurt the Jets to at least ask and gauge his interest in the job.
