New York Jets Recap: Buffalo Bills Dominate Jets From Opening Kickoff

In what may be considered one of the worst starts for a quarterback in Jets history, the Jets were somehow able to stay in this game.

The Jets had four offensive drives in the first quarter; during those drives, Geno Smith completed two of eight pass attempts for five yards and three interceptions. That is not a typo, Smith actually completed more passes to Buffalo Bills’ defenders than his own receivers. Rex Ryan saw enough and benched Smith in favor of Michael Vick.

Before the benching, the Bills were able to score two touchdowns. The first was a 22-yard pass to Robert Woods, and the second was a one yarder ro tight end Lee Smith. Vick was able to respond, leading the offense 76-yards down the field, ending it with a Chris Ivory two-yard rushing touchdown to cut the Bills’ lead to 14 – 7.

Next drive, the Bills responded with Kyle Orton throwing deep to Sammy Watkins for 84 yards. Watkins would of scored a touchdown, but started celebrating too early and was caught by Saalim Hakim, who plays both receiver and defensive back for the Jets at the five yard line. A couple of plays later, Frank Summers ran it in for a two-yard touchdown giving the Bills a 21 – 7 lead.

Both teams went three and out on their next possessions. The following Jets’ drive, Vick fumbled the ball on the Jets’ 21, giving the Bills prime position. The Jets’ defense was able to hold the Bills to a 53-yard field goal by Dan Carpenter, giving the Bills a 24 – 7 lead.

The Jets answered by scoring 10 points in six minutes. Getting the ball back with 6:16 to go in the 2nd quarter, Vick moved the ball, including a 24 yard ran deep into Bills territory.  With another Ivory touchdown, this time for two yards, the Jets cut the Bills’ lead to 24 – 14. The defense forced another Bills three and out, giving Jets ball with 33 seconds to go in the half at their own 42. With a 12-yard pass to Chris Johnson and nine-yard pass to Jeremy Kerley, the Jets set up Nick Folk for a 55-yard field goal attempt. He knocked it threw, giving the Jets plenty of momentum heading into halftime down only 24-17.

The Jets defense constantly kept the team in the game, but the offense time and time again failed to do anything with the ball. The Bills were able to get two more Carpenter field goals to give the Bills a 30 – 17 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Jets failed to get out of their own side of the field until the 4th quarter when the game was out of reach. The offensive woes continued, as Vick fumbled the ball and threw an interception during the 3rd quarter.

The Bills were finally able to score a touchdown within the first minute of the fourth quarter basically putting the last nail in the Jets coffin, making it 37 – 17. After the Jets went three and out, the Bills scored another touchdown. Watkins got a little retribution from his first half gaffe, taking a short pass 61-yards to the house, making sure to not get caught this time and giving the Bills a 43 – 17 lead.

The Jets did score one more touchdown, a three-yard run by Bilal Powell that started off ugly as Vick ran into him before handing it off. Alas it was too little, too late as the Jets lost 43 – 23.

There was really nothing positive to come out of this game for the Jets, as the the offensive ineptitude was an embarrassing sight to see. The offense ended the game with six turnovers, giving up four sacks and six quarterback hits in the process. The defense was the only reason this game wasn’t worse of a blowout.

Next week the Jets go on the road and play the Kansas City Chiefs with kickoff scheduled at 1pm.
