New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese and co-owner John Mara have remained noncommittal on Odell Beckham Jr.’s fifth year option.

The New York Giants have one of the best wide receivers in the NFL in Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham Jr. is on the second half of his rookie deal, so the Giants have a decision to make by May 3rd. Will they pick up his fifth-year option for 2018?

The answer would seem to be a no-brainer. Beckham Jr. has been the only consistent weapon the Giants have had since being drafted 12th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has re-written multiple Giants and NFL records, taking the league by storm with his one-handed catch against the Dallas Cowboys his rookie season and continuing to ride that wave in the two season after.

If the production has been unreal on the court, why have the Giants not yet picked up the fifth year option? It would seem to be an easy decision, but the Giants management, including general manager Jerry Reese and co-owner John Mara, have been noncommittal on the matter.

"“We are going to discuss that when the time gets closer,” Reese said on Thursday afternoon. “We will keep all of our options open with respect to that.”"

How much closer do the Giants want to take it to the deadline? Mara also wouldn’t commit one way or the other at the NFL Owners Meetings last month as well. Beckham’s option will cost the average of the third-25th highest paid players at wide receiver.

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY believes that will be about $8 million dollars. When looking at the wide receiver landscape and what players are being paid nowadays, that sounds like a no-brainer for the Giants. Players set to make $8 million in 2017 are Kenny Stills and Marvin Jones, both players everyone would agree are not on Beckham Jr.’s level.

As Vacchiano mentions, there have been some negatives with Beckham Jr. His emotions have gotten the best of him previously, being fined hundreds of thousands of dollars and suspended once. The Giants are hoping he cuts down on that, but what he brings to the field is virtually unreplaceable.

The Giants have 11 days remaining until the deadline to make a decision. While they have not publicly announced what they plan to do, it would be a major surprise if they do not pick up the option for the 2018 season.
