New York Giants safety Darian Thompson is doing well in rehab and could return to the field this spring.

The New York Giants received excellent contributions in 2016 from their rookie class. That was a big reason for the team winning 11 games in the regular season in addition to their improvements defensively.

Three of the Giants’ six picks last season were used on the defense. First round pick Eli Apple played better as the season went on. Fifth round pick B.J. Goodson was an integral part of special teams, and the Giants have high hopes for him this season.

The one player the Giants missed was safety Darian Thompson. The third round pick out of Boise State was expected to start alongside Landon Collins in the defensive backfield. Thompson started the first two games of the season, playing 88 snaps against the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints.

That would be the end of Thompson’s rookie season. Thompson suffered a Lisfranc injury in his foot that would ultimately end his season. He was close to returning later in the season, but suffered a setback and was shut down.

Thompson has been working hard rehabbing the injury and said that things are looking up for him. He has not had any more setbacks, and Jordan Raanan said that he should not suffer any long-term effects from the injury.

"“I’ve been feeling really good,” Thompson told ESPN last week. “No soreness. They want to take their time. With my progress, things are looking up.”"

This is excellent news for the Giants. They already have a top-ranked defense, but adding Thompson should make them even better. Along with Collins and Andrew Adams, who helped replace Thompson last season, the Giants have quite a trio at safety. Add in Janoris Jenkins, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and Apple, and the Giants could have one of the best secondaries in the NFL.

The injury took its toll on Thompson. He re-injured the foot in his first practice back, and as a result was laid up for weeks resting. But, once he was able to, he returned to the facility to begin watching film and sitting in on meetings, preparing as if he was going to play that week.

"“I used this time to better myself mentally, to focus on more details like watching film and learning the playbook. I feel like it actually benefitted me,” Thompson said. “Also, I learned not to take anything for granted. I was as high as I’ve ever been and then I got dropped down really quick. This whole opportunity is a blessing and I can’t wait to get back out there.”"

There is a chance that Thompson could return to the field this spring with his teammates. He is confident that he will be able to participate in some OTA’s and minicamp. The Giants will not rush him, but they will be excited once he is able to get back on the field and help them win some games.
