The 2017 NCAA Tournament East Region wraps up this afternoon. It will be a SEC showdown, as the South Carolina Gamecocks will face off with the Florida Gators. The winner of the game will head to Phoenix to participate in the Final Four.
South Carolina has become the Cinderella of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Frank Martin’s squad relied heavily on their defense throughout the season. They have had consistency on offense outside of do-it-all guard Sindarius Thornwell.
The Gamecocks have gotten rolling offensively thus far in the tournament, disposing of Marquette, Duke, and Baylor with relative ease. They scored at least 70 points in all three games, a total they reached in only 15 times in the regular season in regulation.

None of those 70-point games came against Florida. The Gamecocks and Gators faced off twice in the regular season with each team winning once on their home floor. Florida comes into the game playing well too.
Florida crushed East Tennessee State and Virginia in their first two games. They had the first overtime game of the 2017 NCAA Tournament in the Sweet 16 against Wisconsin, needing a buzzer beater from Chris Chiozza to defeat the Badgers.
Like South Carolina, Florida plays a stifling brand of defense. They have held opponents to 62.3 points per game, which includes 83 allowed in the overtime win over Wisconsin. Unlike South Carolina, Florida has a strong offense to back it up.
These two teams are very familiar with each other so the quick turnaround shouldn’t affect them as it did other teams in the Elite Eight. They can fall back on the two games earlier this season and matchups in previous years from conference play.
But, this is the NCAA Tournament. The two have never faced off on a stage like this, as this is the deepest South Carolina has gone in a postseason tournament in program history.
While South Carolina and Florida may not be the matchup many people projected in their bracket at the beginning of the tournament, it should be an excellent game to decide the season series between the two and earn a trip to the Final Four.
