New York Knicks rumors: According to sources, the Knicks have not dismissed the idea of signing Derrick Rose to a long-term deal.

Recent New York Knicks rumors have begun focusing on the team’s offseason plans. With a record of 27-42 and the playoffs basically out of the question, it makes sense for the Knicks to begin looking to the future. Things are positive in terms of the 2017 NBA Draft, as the Knicks have their first round draft pick and two selections in the second round.

Where the Knicks’ plans are unknown is in free agency. The Knicks could have some money to spend, but the question remains as to who would want to play for the Knicks. There have been reports that players are turned off by the Knicks because of how Phil Jackson has treated Carmelo Anthony.

If there is any truth to that, the only way the Knicks can add talent during the offseason is through trades or re-signing their own players. One player that people will be paying a lot of attention to come free agency is Derrick Rose.

The Knicks acquired Rose from the Chicago Bulls along with Justin Holiday last offseason. It was a move that signaled a change in direction, as the Knicks added veterans hoping to make a postseason push.

That decision has backfired. The Knicks are closer to a top-three pick than the postseason. The veterans they have added haven’t put them any closer to being contenders, leading to big decisions again this offseason.

Rose is an unrestricted free agent. That can free up about $30 million dollars for the Knicks this offseason if they denounce his rights according to Ian Begley of ESPN New York. Many people would believe that would be an easy decision, but that may not be the case.

With how much the Knicks have struggled this season it would make sense to change things up this offseason. Rose has shown he has some explosion back offensively to get to the rim, but he has been a negative player overall for the Knicks. He has performed miserably defensively, and the bizarre incident when he went missing in January leaves a bad taste in the month of many people.

All of that would normally add up to a player not being retained. But, when it comes to the Knicks, normal rarely happens. According to Begley’s sources, the Knicks have not yet ruled out the possibility of re-signing Rose this offseason.

That will shock many people. Rose is reportedly looking to cash in this summer with hopes of landing a max contract. There is a strong possibility he comes up short of a max deal; the likelihood of it coming from the Knicks should be even slimer.

The Rose experiment has not panned out for the Knicks. Why they would entertain bringing Rose back makes little sense. This offseason gives the team a great opportunity to retool with a building block alongside Kristaps Porzingis for a true rebuild.
