New York Jets Rumors: The team is reportedly a big fan of North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

New York Jets rumors will begin circulating as the organization turns their attention to 2017. The Jets are officially eliminated from the postseason, so they are playing out the string of the season and evaluating the roster for next season. One of the places the Jets will look to find talent is in the NFL Draft.

Despite being months away from the draft and the order not even close to being set, the Jets are already a part of an NFL Draft rumor. According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the Jets have their sights set on North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

Here is what Mehta’s source said to him:

"“They got their eyes set on the North Carolina quarterback,” one rival scout told the Daily News. “The Jets are all over this kid. All over him. They’ll probably deny it if you ask, but they love that kid. That’s their guy. They’re not going to get him though, because I think that kid is going to get over-drafted.”"

That is probably not a name many casual fans have heard, but Trubisky is quickly moving up draft boards. He has a chance to further improve his stock in the Hyundai Sun Bowl against Stanford on December 30th. Trubisky has not even declared for the NFL Draft yet, but his mother said that he is on track to graduate early, which could prompt him to declare and forgo his senior season.

More from New York Jets

There are a lot of things to like about Trubisky. He has the size, standing 6-feet-3 inches and weighing 220 pounds. Scouts believe he has the athleticism and arm strength to succeed in the NFL, which is good to hear. But, this situation has similarities to when the Jets selected Mark Sanchez in 2009.

Like Trubisky, Sanchez came into the NFL Draft off a strong collegiate season, but it was his lone starting season at the collegiate level. Both Trubisky and Sanchez played sparingly their first two years at UNC and USC respectively, but were not the starters until their final seasons at college.

That sort of inexperience would be tough to select that high in the draft again, but it is no secret that the Jets are in the quarterback market. But, the Jets are not alone in needing a quarterback. The Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Cleveland Browns, all teams currently ahead of the Jets in the draft order, need quarterbacks and could make a reach ahead of them.

Reaching for quarterbacks is nothing new in the NFL Draft. Everyone is looking for that next franchise signal caller. In a weak quarterback class, you can be assured that teams will reach for one, especially if it is a guy that they like. Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer and Clemson’s DeShaun Watson are also in the mix.

This is not the season to be near the top of the draft looking for quarterback help it would seem. Things could change in the coming weeks and months leading up to the draft, but right now it looks like the Jets are in a tough position no matter how much they like Trubisky in the early going.
