Brooklyn Nets Rumors: Shooting guard Sergey Karasev won’t return to the team next season according to his father Vasily.

Brooklyn Nets rumors have slowed down recently as the biggest hole in the organization, a head coach, was filled a couple of weeks ago. With no picks in the upcoming NBA Draft, the Nets focus will be improving their roster via free agency.

Before they get to courting other team’s free agents, the Nets will have a couple of decisions to make with their own free agents. There are a couple of player options that need to be figured out with Wayne Ellington and Shane Larkin, while there are a number of unrestricted free agents as well.

Donald Sloan, Sergey Karasev, Willie Reed and Markel Brown are all set to hit unrestricted free agency. It is fair to say the Nets have differing levels of willingness to re-sign any of those players, as some showed promise last season while others didn’t perform as well as they would have hoped.

The decision may be easy for one of those free agents, as a decision may be made already. According to Vasily Karasev, Sergey’s father and coach of the year in the Russian league, Karasev will not be returning to the Nets next season.

While having a discussion with the Russian newspaper Izvestia, one of the topics was Sergey’s basketball future. Orazio Cauchi of Sportando has the scoop, and according to him Vasily said they are not sure what the future holds for Sergey as it is too early in the process, but one thing was sure is that he would have a new place to play next season. “One thing is for sure, Sergey won’t play for the Nets next season,” Vasily said.

This needs to be taken with a grain of salt, as Nets Daily points out that Sergey has previously contradicted things that his father has said. During the season Vasily said that Sergey wished to be traded away from the Nets, something that Sergey denied.

Karasev has had little chance to showcase his skills since being the 19th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He has appeared in only 93 games in three seasons, partly because he was not in the rotation and also because of injury.

He appeared in 40 games for the Nets last season, playing only 399 minutes, scoring 97 points with 58 rebounds and 32 assists. Karasev is still only 22-years old, so there is still plenty of time for him to realize his potential; he just needs to find a place that will give him an opportunity to do so.

That place does not appear to be with the Nets, who will be looking to overhaul the roster under their new regime of Sean Marks in the front office and Kenny Atkinson as the head coach.
