Ben McAdoo will become the New York Giants new head coach after only two seasons as offensive coordinator.

McAdoo, one of the internal favorites to replace Tom Coughlin, is closing in on a deal to become the 17th head coach in New York Giants history, according to multiple reports. He is only 38 years old, with zero head coaching experience.

The Giants have been eyeing a replacement for Coughlin, who stepped down last week after coaching New York to two Super Bowl championships in his 12-year tenure in New York. McAdoo earned praise the last couple of years for his work with quarterback Eli Manning who has tossed 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions and has a completion percentage of 62.8% with McAdoo as the offensive coordinator.

Along with McAdoo, the Giants were interviewed former head coaches Mike Smith and Doug Marrone, as well as current Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin.

“He’s really advance quickly, and the key is he’s got an excellent work ethic. He puts in the work and he cares about it a lot.”- Aaron Rodgers on Ben McAdoo

According to reports, Spagnuolo will remain the defensive coordinator after anchoring the worst defense in the NFL this season. In regards to who will take over as offensive coordinator, all signs point to former Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin. McAdoo and Philbin worked together in Green Bay under Mike McCarthy.

There are many benefits from having McAdoo as the next Giants’ head coach. For one, Manning is 35, not getting any younger, and probably has only a few good years left. He has not only thrived in the system, but has expressed his admiration for McAdoo, and will no doubt benefit from the continuity in his offensive system. Bringing in a new coach with a different system in mind would not only mess with the best version of Eli Manning we’ve seen, but it’s almost too late for Eli to adjust to a new system AGAIN that may not suit him.

The one switch McAdoo will make is getting the most out of the running game. It’s obvious that a four man run game will fail just as it did in 2015. He will be looking to adjust to more of a two back combo like usual and give Rashad Jennings a bigger role in the offense. Once he started using Jennings in more of a featured role late in the season, the ground game improved tremendously.

More from New York Giants

There’s not much for him to fix defensively, as the horrendous season was caused by lack of talent, so general manager Jerry Reese needs to do his part to re-stock the roster and get some more pass rushers.

The most important thing is, the Giants have their new head coach, and he may be the best person for the job. More to come as the confirmation of McAdoo as head coach should come as early as Thursday morning.
