Jason Pierre-Paul, New York Giants Agree To Deal

It is official; Jason Pierre-Paul is returning to the New York Giants. The defensive end and the Giants agreed to a one-year contract to bring him back into the fold. The terms of the contract are not yet available, but it is widely assumed that Pierre-Paul will be making less than the $870,000 per week he was scheduled to make under the $14.8 million franchise player tender the Giants had originally offered him.

The contract that he received is expected to also be incentive laden. His base will be much lower, but he will have a chance to earn some back depending on how much he plays, and the production he is able to deliver. Once he gets back on the field, expect the Giants to unleash him right away, as they need his pass rushing talents. The Giants currently rank second to last in sacks, and Pierre-Paul will surely help them out.

The two-week roster exemption is important for the Giants, as it gives them a chance to evaluate him in practice before putting him on the active roster. It gives the Giants time to get him re-acclimated to the team and back into true football shape. While the Giants could get out of the contract conceivably if he does not show anything in these next two weeks, it is highly unlikely that the Giants would have cleared and signed him to a contract if they didn’t believe he could play.

With this time table, the Giants expect Pierre-Paul to make his season debut in Week 10 against the New England Patriots. If he is not ready for that game, the Giants have the luxury of acclimating him during their Week 11 bye week to prepare for a divisional matchup with the Washington Redskins Week 12.

With the confidence he has in himself, it would not be a surprise to see him on the field at least in sub packages in Week 10. Pierre-Paul was willing and wanting to play the first time he met with the Giants, so it would be hard to imagine that passion going away now that he is so close to retaking the field.

Through a statement from the team, it seems he has been doing everything to get back, saying, “Every day, I got up at 7:30 and lifted weights, I’ve been doing what I have to do to stay in football shape.”

Head coach Tom Coughlin is happy to get Pierre-Paul into the mix, and with good reason. “It is just good to have Jason back in out building. You can feel his energy, desire to overcome what he’s had to endure,” Said Coughlin.  Pierre-Paul also let it be known that he was returning to the Giants via his social media. The Giants are in great position in the NFC East, currently residing in the top spot with a 4-3 record. Their chances to hold onto that spot will greatly increase with Pierre-Paul in the fold; even without his right index finger and part of his right hand, Pierre-Paul cannot be worse than what the Giants are currently trotting out there as pass rushing threats, if you can even call it that.
