New York Jets: Chris Ivory Continues To Lead The Way

The New York Jets were able to knock off the Washington Redskins this afternoon, winning 34-20. It was tough sledding for the Jets in the early going, as they made three turnovers in the first half, letting the Redskins hang around. But, it was a different story in the second half, as the Jets relied on Chris Ivory and he was up to the task.

The Jets offense this season has gone as Ivory as gone, and against the Redskins it was no different. Coming into the game, the Redskins had one of the better run defenses in the NFL, giving up 97.6 yards per game and 4.4 yards per carry. A big reason for those numbers even being that high is from the damage that Devonta Freeman did last week. Well, those numbers will be getting worse after this week, as Ivory ran through them with relative ease.

Ivory handled 20 carries and made the most of them, gaining 146 yards and one touchdown, with a long run of 54 yards. That equals an impressive 7.3 yards per carry average. Ivory was showing great burst when bouncing the ball outside, and the same power that we have become accustomed to seeing him have between the tackles. He was also involved in the passing game some this week with Bilal Powell ailing. Ivory caught all three of his targets for 50 yards.

This makes two dominant games in a row for Ivory. Prior to the bye week, he ripped through the Miami Dolphins in London for 166 yards and one touchdown. That was a career-high for Ivory in rushing yards, and was also the most yards gained in the 12-game history of the NFL’s International Series.

When Ivory is in the lineup, the Jets are a totally different team. They want to be a run-first offense, and that is something Ivory has enabled them to do. The only time that they looked out of sorts this season was when Ivory sat out against the Philadelphia Eagles, and they had to rely on the arm of Ryan Fitzpatrick. Not coincidentally, that is also the only game the Jets lost this season.

The Jets are hoping for more of the same from Ivory as the season goes on, and there hasn’t been any signs of that slowing down. They will undoubtedly rely on him once again, as the Jets will face their stiffest test of the season next week against the currently undefeated New England Patriots. You can be sure that they will once again be relying on Ivory early and often as they will attempt to slow down the Patriots offense in any way possible.
