With the New York Giants heading into their Week 5 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, it means that a quarter of their season is already in the books. While the 2-2 record they have put together has them in great position in the NFC East, they are probably a little disappointed as they have held a double-digit lead in every game this season.

Mental errors, poor clock management and questionable play calling the first two weeks of the season had some people pushing the Giants to the side, as they had two heartbreaking losses to the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons. But, they have been able to get things together the last two weeks, defeating the Washington Redskins and Buffalo BIlls to even up their record.

It has some people talking about the Giants as a possible dark horse, as the NFC East is wide open currently, waiting for a team to come up and snatch it. With the injuries in Dallas, the surprisingly poor start for the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Redskins being the Redskins, why can’t it be the Giants?

The Giants have ridden some surprising success in certain areas, as they were expected to be in weekly shootouts, but instead have been in grind it out games with a defensive mentality. There has been some up-and-down performances, but that is expected with a team that is lacking talent in some areas and trying to compensate for it the best way that they can.

Well, Tom Coughlin and the coaching staff has done exactly that, as the Giants are making the most of the players they have available to them, game planning to their strengths to make things work. Will that reflect in a good report card for the Giants through the first quarter of the season?
