New York Jets: Keys to Winning Against Miami

The New York Jets have already arrived in London and with the help of a sleep therapist and some familiar toilet paper, they hope to be mentally prepared for the Miami Dolphins. However, there will be other key factors in order for the Jets to pull out the win in England.

Health, as always, will be a key factor in this game. One of the reasons, in my opinion, the Jets lost last week against the Philadelphia Eagles was the fact that both Chris Ivory and Eric Decker didn’t play. If Ivory and Decker play this week against the Dolphins, I think they will have a good chance to beat them.

Despite a big offseason and beefing up their defensive line, the Dolphins have allowed other teams to run the ball against them. If Ivory can play and establish the run, the Jets can work on a two headed attack, unlike last week against Philly. Without Ivory  and Decker, the Eagles were able to bottle up the run and double team Brandon Marshall, preventing the Jets top three weapons from being used. The Jets can not allow that to happen again if they wish to win this game.

Despite the Dolphins D-line not looking all that good, they will be going up against a New York Jets offensive line that has played both up and down and will be missing a key piece. Brian Winters will be playing for Willie Colon this week at RG. Winters hasn’t played all that well in his short NFL carrier, but has turned in a couple solid games. He will need to have another good game to prevent Ndamukong Suh, Cameron Wake or Olivier Vernon from causing havoc in the backfield.

The final key to the game will be, drumroll please, quarterback play. If Fitzpatrick can take care of the ball and not turn the ball over three times this week, the Jets should be able to pull out a win outside the United States. Fitzpatrick will benefit from having Decker and Ivory back. However, if Ivory is back, I think they can survive even without Decker. Establishing the run will allow Fitzpatrick to run some play-action plays and allow the offense to be less one-dimensional.

This is a very winnable game for the Jets. The Dolphins are in turmoil, with some reports of their head coach being canned if they lose this game. The Jets have been very stable so far behind Todd Bowles and as long as they limit their mistakes the Jets can come back to home 3-1.
