New York Giants Updated Injury Report

The New York Giants do not have much time to recover from their excruciating Week 2 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. They have a quick turnaround for their Week 3 game, as the Giants will be hosting their NFC East division rival Washington Redskins on Thursday night football. The Thursday night football game is difficult enough to prepare for, but it will be that much more difficult with the amount of injuries the Giants are dealing with.

The secondary, namely the safety position, has been an area ravaged by injury for the Giants. Brandon Meriweather has been strong, but Landon Collins has struggled a bit in the early going. But, one player the Giants could ill afford to lose was Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The leader and veteran of the secondary was the one thing the Giants could count on week in and week out, but against the Redskins it is unlike Rodgers-Cromartie will be on the field.

Rodgers-Cromartie was injured on the first play of the game against the Falcons, getting a stinger while tackling Julio Jones. He was able to return to the game later on, but the return was short lived. Rodgers-Cromartie would sustain a concussion on his first play back, as he was kicked in the face while tackling Tevin Coleman. He stumbled while trying to get up, was evaluated and deemed out for the game shortly after. He has been unable to participate in any practice yet this week, and seeing him on the field Thursday at this time would be a surprise.

Another important piece in jeopardy of playing Thursday is left tackle Ereck Flowers. The rookie left tackle originally injured the ankle in Week 1 against the Cowboys, but didn’t leave that game and gutted it out in practice last week. He earned the praise of head coach Tom Coughlin for that, but he injured the ankle again against the Falcons, putting his availability against the Redskins in real danger.

“Depends. Is he going to be able to function properly? Does he know exactly what he’s doing? This is a week in which you could say that anybody who can go through a job-through can be prepared, and I think he’ll mentally be ready. But they’re going to be very conservative and make sure that he has a good grasp of the healing process,” Coughlin said.

It sounds like Coughlin knows about as much as us regarding the availability for Flowers, but it wasn’t exactly a glowing report. If Flowers is unable to get on the field, expect John Jerry to enter the lineup at guard, with Justin Push moving to tackle. The Giants are hoping Flowers can play though, as the offensive line crumbled once he was forced from the game last week.

In addition, Jerome Cunningham, who was filling in for the injured Daniel Fells, has also missed both practices this week and looks in danger of missing Week 3. Thankfully for the Giants, Fells has been a participant both days, limited on Monday and full Tuesday, and looks ready to get back into the lineup.

Also falling under the category of good news is the work of Jon Beason. It was widely thought that Beason would miss this week because of the short rest time between games, but he looks like he may have a shot at playing.

Beason has participated in both practices this week, being limited Monday and a full participant on Tuesday. That increases Beason’s chances of making his season debut Thursday night, as Wednesday is the big day. If he responds well after a full practice, there is a good chance he can take the field Thursday and give them some much needed veteran leadership in the middle of the defense.

Victor Cruz has also been a non-participant the first two practices, but is moving in the right direction. He was running on the cross on the side with a trainer for the first time in weeks. Some people believe that Preston Parker being released was a sign Cruz was ready to take the field, but it is hard to imagine the Giants throwing Cruz into the fire Thursday night with how much time he has missed.

In addition to Cruz, Rodgers-Cromartie, Flowers and Cunningham, Markus Kuhn and Owa Odighizuwa didn’t participate in either practice and look like long shots to play Thursday. The Giants are hoping Robert Ayers can play after taking part in a limited part of practice Tuesday after missing Monday.

Filling out the injury report were Jay Bromley, who was limited both days, Geoff Schwartz who was full Tuesday after being out sick Monday and Cullen Jenkins being full Tuesday after a limited practice Monday.

The Redskins also have a lengthy injury report, as Jason Hatcher and Chris Baker were both on there for non-injury related problems, DeSean Jackson, Perry Riley Jr., Justin Rogers and Martrell Spaight all missed both practices, while Tom Compton was limited both days and Morgan Moses was limited Monday and full Tuesday.
