New York Jets 2015 Draft Class Shines Bright in Preseason Game Two

From week one to week two of preseason, the New York Jets made tremendous strides on both sides of the ball. Among the many positive takeaways from the game were strong performances by members of the 2015 draft class.

The draft class, picked by the new New York regime of general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles, was headed by sixth overall selection defensive end Leonard Williams. After a quiet week one, Williams emerged against the Atlanta Falcons, living up to his nickname, “bear cat.” Williams recorded five tackles and his first career sack, which ended up as a safety as well, in two quarters of play.

After the game, Bowles acknowledged Williams strong performance and noted that he “provided the energy and spark that we needed,” to turn the football game around. New York can only hope that this is the beginning of a great career to come.

Third round pick Lorenzo Mauldin IV (that’s how it’s spelled on his jersey too) had an impassive game as well. While the linebacker did not record a tackle, he was everywhere, running sideline to sideline on every play. The guy has a good motor, and he showed it in the second quarter by sacking Atlanta quarterback T.J. Yates, but the play was called back due to a penalty. Just by looking at him on Friday, you could tell he played more confidently, and understood where he was supposed to be on every play. Expect big things out of this kid.

Finally, quarterback Bryce Petty played exceptionally well, making great strides from Week One. Against the Detroit Lions, Petty seemed a bit out of place, looking much like a rookie. On Friday, Petty came out with much poise, and to me, he looked like a second or third year player. I may be over-applauding the guy but I thought he looked really good.

Petty went 12 for 19 for 168 yards and recorded his first NFL touchdown pass. He looked calm in the pocket, and seemed to have control of the offense. What I liked the best was that he went through his progressions well, often hitting his check down Zac Stacy, instead of trying to go for the big play. Petty looked solid, and I hope he continues to get better every week.

Even though we are heading into only Week Three, this draft class is looking pretty good. Its easy to shine when you succeed a general manager like John Idzik, but Maccagnan looks like he might have gotten this draft class right. Aside from Devin Smith who I am eager to see, Williams, Mauldin, and Petty all look like promising players for Gang Green for years to come.
