New York Knicks News: Sasha Vujacic Signed

The New York Knicks worked fast in replacing waived shooting guard Ricky Ledo, as they signed Sasha Vujacic. Vujacic hasn’t played in the NBA since the 2013-14 when he played on a 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Clippers, appearing in two games and playing 10 minutes.

It was originally reported that the Knicks were signing Vujacic to a contract that would be a training camp invite, but that ended up not being correct. Vujacic signed a guaranteed one-year deal, and will make the team out of training camp. His contract is fully guaranteed for the 2015-16 season.

Vujacic was more than likely brought in solely for the experience he has playing alongside and under two high ranking people in the organization; President Phil Jackson and head coach Derek Fisher. Vujacic played parts of five seasons under Jackson with the Lakers, whom he was a member of from 2004-2011. Four of those seasons came alongside Fisher, who was the point guard on the team. Vujacic won two titles with the Lakers, and despite playing minutes as a backup can still bring some much needed experience along with him.

What he will also bring along with him is an ability to knock down a perimeter jump shot. The 31-year old was an above average three-point shooters in his NBA career, knocking down 37.1 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. The Knicks desperately need more snipers from the perimeter, so there is a slight chance that Vujacic actually has a role with the team, even if it’s a slight one.

Vujacic is the latest in string of former Jackson Lakers to be brought to the Knicks. First it was Lamar Odom, and he was followed by Shannon Brown and DJ Mbenga. None of them had necessarily long stints with the team, but the connection is definitely there that Jackson has no problem bringing in players that he is comfortable with and knows the ins and outs of.

With Vujacic now signed, the Knicks roster stands at 12 players with guaranteed contracts. Langston Galloway doesn’t have a guaranteed contract right now, but he is expected to make the team, putting the number at 13. That more than likely leaves the Knicks with two roster spots heading into training camp.

Harvard swingman Wesley Saunders was invited to training camp, and there are rumors swirling Thanasis Antetokounmpo will also be brought to training camp to fight for a roster spot. There is a chance that the Knicks are not done signing free agents though, as they are still in the market for a big man. Carlos Boozer and Kevin Seraphin have been the two connected to the Knicks most, as both would fill their need for a big man at the end of their bench. Seraphin would be the higher upside signing though, as the 25-year old has a much higher ceiling than the aging Boozer.
