New York Knicks News: The Knicks opened up another roster spot Thursday when they decided to waive guard Ricky Ledo, giving them 12 players on the roster.

The New York Knicks gave themselves a little breathing room when it comes to adding to their roster, opening up a spot Thursday. To open up that space they had to waive someone though, and it ended up being Ricky Ledo that was let go.

Ledo was signed by the Knicks last season in late March, appearing in 12 games with the team through the remainder of the season. He had a partially guaranteed contract for the 2015-16 season, but the Knicks decided to move on from him.

There are some people that thought Ledo had some skills to stick at the NBA level, but he didn’t do enough to show that with the Knicks in his showcase at the tailend of last season. Anyone who watched the Knicks knows they were basically holding open tryouts after trading Iman Shumpert and J.R. Smith, so players like Lance Thomas, Louis Amundson, Alexey Shved and Ledo had a chance to showcase their talents. Some of them made the most of it, such as Thomas and Amundson who were both re-signed by the Knicks. Shved parlayed his strong finish to the season into a multi-year deal overseas, but Ledo was unable to really put together anything of substance.

He averaged 7.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 19.4 minutes per game. He shot only 35.4 percent from the field, but was able to make 41.7 percent from beyond the three-point line. The Knicks held onto him throughout the offseason, putting him on their Summer League team hoping that he would show them something to keep him around.

Unfortunately, that did not happen. When watching the Summer League games, Ledo was constantly overshadowed by other players fighting for attention from the Knicks and potentially other teams to sign a contract with. Too often when he was on the court, you didn’t even know he was out there as he didn’t do anything to distinguish himself from the rest of the group.

As a player heading into his third year in the NBA, and with his playing style, he should dominate a playing setting such as the Summer League but he was unable to do so, and it ultimately ended with his release. Ledo averaged 6.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals in 17.2 minutes per game, making five appearances and starting one game.

It is still possible that Ledo could get a training camp invite from another team in the NBA, or the Knicks even. But, being unable to make a mark last season with how lowly the Knicks were does not bode well for his NBA future. With Ledo waived, the Knicks now have 12 players under contract, including the patrially guaranteed deal for Langston Galloway, but he is expected to make the team. That means they have three roster spots remaining currently heading into training camp in a couple of weeks.
