Yankees, Mets Both Eyeing Recent World Series-Winning Reliever
The 2024 MLB season is quickly approaching and teams are still looking to add to their ball clubs. Both the New York Yankees and the Mets had disappointing 2023 seasons and want to flip the script this year.
The New York Yankees and New York Mets are among the teams that have contacted relief pitcher Hector Neris per SNY reporter Andy Martino. Neris is looking for a deal in the ballpark of $7-$11 million on a one or two-year deal.
MLB Free Agency: Yankees & Mets Both Interested in Hector Neris
The 34-year-old is coming off a great campaign in 2023. He went 6-3 with an ERA of 1.71 with 77 strikeouts. He also had a WHIP of 1.05. Neris owns a 3.24 career ERA with 11.2 K/9 across his 10 years in the MLB.
The Yankees had the best bullpen in the majors last season, ranking first with an ERA of 3.34. Meanwhile, the Mets could use Neris for the back half of games. In 2023, New York was 22nd in the majors in bullpen ERA (4.45).
Neris would provide some big-game experience thanks to his time with the Houston Astros. The Dominican Republic native has a 2-0 record in the postseason with 17 strikeouts in 15 appearances, including the 2022 World Series title with the Astros.
He looks to put away batters with his four-seamer and split-finger. Neris used the four-seamer on 51.7% of his pitches in 2023 with the split-finger right behind at 28.8%.
Either of these teams would benefit from Neris hopping onto their bullpen. Having a reliable reliever to put on the mound is valuable to any club in the league.
