Yankees Lose Yet Another Important Arm To Injury
The New York Yankees have recently announced that Clarke Schmidt has been placed on the 15-day IL due to a right lat strain. As part of the corresponding move, they have recalled right-hander Cody Morris from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Schmidt has been superb this season, starting 11 games with a 5-3 record, a 2.52 ERA, and 67 strikeouts. This news is particularly significant as the Yankees are already without their ace, Gerrit Cole, who is sidelined with an injury. Schmidt will now join him on the injured list, further challenging the team's starting rotation.
Yankees News: Clarke Schmidt Placed on 15-Day Injury List
Before the injury announcement, Schmidt last pitched on Sunday against San Diego, where he allowed just one run over five innings but still took the loss. After the game, Schmidt mentioned that it was one of those starts where he did not feel 100 percent physically, although he did not specify any particular issue.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced today that it will be approximately 4-6 weeks before Schmidt returns to the mound. "It's going to be a while", Boone stated.
Schmidt had an MRI and consulted with Dr. Neal ElAttache today in Los Angeles. It has been confirmed that Cody Poteet will make his next start on Saturday.
New York will now be down to just four starters: Luis Gil, Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, and Marcus Stroman. All of them have been solid starters for the team this season, carrying the rotation without their ace. Out of all of them, Luis Gil has been the most surprising starter thus far. He has emerged as a breakout star while coming back from a season-ending surgery. His current record this year stands at 7-1 with an ERA of 1.99 and 79 strikeouts. If he can keep up this trend, he may earn himself a CY Young Award.
It would be interesting to see how the Yankees' rotation will now perform after the latest injury to Clarke Schmidt.
