Yankees Get A Positive Update From Gerrit Cole
Jon Heyman, NY Post columnist has reported that ace Gerrit Cole has targeted a date for his return around mid-June. The reigning CY Young winner has been out for a while due to right elbow inflammation that took place earlier this spring.
Cole is also expected to throw off the mound as early as May 4, which is a positive step in the direction followed by a throwing program. While dodging season-ending surgery also meant that he would have plenty of time to build himself up and get in rhythm once the playoffs arrived.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone has stated, "It has gone well so far. His build-up, and checking the boxes and levels of intensity. So far so good and getting off the mound will be another step."
Without their ace, New York is currently playing some solid baseball at the moment. Their record right now stands at 21-13 and only trailing Baltimore by one game in the AL East standings.
Last season was a rough year for New York who saw themselves missing the postseason for the first time since 2016 after posting a record of 82-80. The team is looking to turn things around and hopes they can be a better team than last year.
Getting Cole back as soon as possible also puts the team in a position to compete with their other rivals in the division. Despite having the third-best ERA in the league, there has been some concerns with rotation in terms of being consistent. Some of the starters lately have been getting rocked.
