Yankees Eyeing Reunion With Reliever Ahead of Trade Deadline
With the MLB trade deadline inching closer, the New York Yankees are one of the teams expected to make a move and will have a list of players on their radar.
On Tuesday, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported that they Yankees are interested in a reunion with reliever Chad Green, who may be placed on the trade block.
Green, 33, has previously pitched seven seasons for the Yankees, starting in 2016 and ending in 2022. In the following offseason, he signed a two-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays worth $8.5 million.
This season, he has been bright for this last-place Blue Jays team. He owns an ERA of 1.88, 0.98 WHIP, and 24 strikeouts. Green's ERA this season would also be the second-best of his career behind the 1.83 he posted with the Yankees in 2017.
Morosi also stated numerous reasons why the Yankees might look to trade for Green, including his popularity during his first stint with the team and his versatility to close or pitch in high-leverage situations.
However, there are some issues with having a player like Green on the team. For starters, he is prone to blowing up crucial games. There are also injury concerns about him that the Yankees need to think about before possibly acquiring him.
He has suffered multiple season-ending surgeries in the past that shouldn't be left out and checked. New York has made multiple mistakes over and over again when it comes to acquiring pitchers with a long injury history.
It would be interesting to see what route the Yankees decide to take when pursuing a reliever ahead of the trade deadline.
