Yankees Avoid the Worst After Anthony Volpe Scratched From Lineup
By Jovan Alford
New York Yankees fans took a huge sigh of relief Sunday after they found out why starting shortstop Anthony Volpe was scratched from the starting lineup.
Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reported on Sunday that Volpe was scratched from the lineup, leading to the Yankees putting Oswaldo Cabrera at shortstop and Jon Berti, who was recently acquired from the Miami Marlins, at third base.
Kirschner adds that Volpe was scratched from today’s series finale against the Houston Astros because of an upset stomach.
Bryan Hoch of MLB.com mentioned that the upset stomach bug has been going around since the team’s trip to Mexico City before the regular season began.
The 22-year-old Volpe has played well to start the 2024 regular season, hitting .400 with a home run and two RBI through three games.
In the Yankees’ 5-3 win over the Astros on Saturday, he went 2-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run in the eighth inning. Without Volpe in the starting lineup, the Yankees will look to complete the four-game series sweep over the Astros.’
