Yankees Acquire Veteran Infielder Amid Recent Injuries
The New York Yankees still sit atop the American League East at 52-27 amid an incredible season. However, the Yankees have recently lost some firepower as Anthony Rizzo, Giancarlo Stanton, Clarke Schmidt, and Jon Birdi have all landed on the injured list.
Two of the most likely call-ups Jasson Dominguez and Everson Pereira have recently landed on the injured list limiting the Yankees' options.
Nonetheless, the team has made a move to fill the role of Rizzo in the short term by trading for Oakland Athletics infielder JD Davis. In return, the Yankees traded Jordan Groshans, who the team signed this offseason.
Davis was designated for assignment by the A's last week but can be valuable for a Yankees team dealing with injuries.
Davis has been a solid hitter this season, posting a .236 batting average with 29 hits, four home runs, and five RBIs with a .366 slugging percentage. The move will allow the Yankees to play Davis at first base, while Rizzo is recovering from injury. He's also spent some time at third base and left field in past seasons.
The Yankees called up Oswaldo Peraza for Sunday's matchup against the Atlanta Braves. However, Aaron Boone indicated that it would only be for the day signaling the trade before the game.
Buying Time Until the MLB Trade Deadline
The decision to bring in JD Davis is a short-term move as the Yankees will likely look to make a long-term addition at the trade deadline if the team isn't confident in Rizzo. This move gives the team a more reliable option at the corners of the infield until the team finds the real fix at the positions.
Along with first base, the Yankees will likely look to revamp their bullpen, as it's cost them a few games recently.
