Why the Giants Should Consider Signing Former All-Pro Safety
While the departure of Saquon Barkley has stolen the headlines this offseason, the loss of Xavier McKinney who signed with the Packers will have a massive impact on the Giants' defense. McKinney led the Giants' defense with three interceptions and finished second on the team with 116 tackles.
The Giants addressed safety in the 2024 NFL Draft selecting Minnesota safety Tyler Nubin with the 47th overall pick.
Heading into the season, the Giants will have a young secondary as Deonte Banks, Cordale Flott, and Jason Pinnock are joined by rookies Dru Phillips and Tyler Nubin as projected starters. The team added a veteran presence in the safety room, signing long-time division rival Jalen Mills.
The Giants, however, with a younger secondary should pursue adding some experience to the group especially if they can land a proven player. That's why former Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons makes a ton of sense for Joe Schoen and the New York Giants.
The veteran safety is still available as a free agent ready to be signed by whichever team offers him a contract. Since 2019, Simmons has been one of the best safeties in the league making Second-Team All-Pro every year except for 2020.
Signing Simmons would give the Giants a star in the secondary to supplement the dominant front seven Joe Schoen is building. Given Simmons' age, he'll likely command a one-year deal, which is perfect for the Giants' timeline.
If the team falls out of contention, the team can potentially look to move Simmons, handing the role over to younger pieces while gaining assets in return.
Adding Talented Pieces Is Crucial for the New York Giants
While the Giants have added key pieces on offense, this team will likely be led by its solid defense this season. If the team is going to ride its defense toward a playoff berth, adding some experience on the back end is important.
However, if the secondary can't hold up in coverage the Giants' incredible pass rush will go to waste, which makes the gamble on a young secondary a potential issue.
