Gleyber Torres was once poised for stardom, being selected to the All-Star Game in each of his first two seasons with the Yankees. However, Torres has struggled to take that next step and has regressed since his incredible start. Now I'm no Gleyber hater, however, it's no secret that he's been solid at best and incredibly inconsistent at worst. From subpar defensive play to a high strikeout rate, Gleyber Torres is far from the star Yankees fans envisioned him to be.

Torres is set to hit the open market this offseason and it isn't hard to imagine a small-market team taking a swing on a guy who has shown some flashes. At the end of the day, second base isn't a stacked position and Gleyber will undoubtedly be the best on the open market, with Ha Seong-Kim (who has a mutual option) potentially being his only competition.

This is where the question has to be asked, what should the Yankees do with their second baseman? It's unlikely they'll receive more than some low-level prospects and MAYBE a bullpen arm if they were to trade him. But are the Yankees in a position to pay him with Soto's impending free agency (not to mention the massive contracts already on the books.)

They could keep Gleyber around, hope he turns things around, and go for that 28th pennant. However, with the ways he's been playing, his role as a starter should come into question with DJ LeMahieu returning, Jon Berti's presence, and Oswaldo Cabrera's defensive superiority. So do the Yankees even NEED Torres?

As the season heats up heading into the summer, we can only hope for Torres' play to do the same. It'll be interesting to monitor the Gleyber situation moving forward, and I am excited to see how Cashman and Boone decide to handle it.
