NFL Network's Peter Schrager is known as one of the most well-sourced experts in the industry, and his first mock draft is always anticipated give his track record.

The NFL insider released his first mock draft of the year on Tuesday and he had the Giants selecting Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy. The insider waits until he's heard enough from the sources he has, meaning his word is typically gospel when it comes to mock drafts.

Schrager has the Giants trading up to the fourth overall pick with the Cardinals trading the sixth overall pick, the 70th overall pick, and the Giants 2025 second-round pick in order to move up.

His reasoning for the Giants move was the following:

"This is merely a mock draft, but I could see this deal coming to fruition. Joe Schoen didn't draft Daniel Jones, J.J. checks a lot of boxes, and Big Blue can get out of Jones' contract after this upcoming season. I know the Giants have been going through all of the quarterback prospects diligently, as they should be."

The Giants moving up to land JJ McCarthy would be a move that at least shows the fanbase what the long-term plan at quarterback is. It's oblivious that Daniel Jones is a lame duck quarterback, so landing the future plan sooner rather than later makes a ton of sense.

Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll are drafting with their job security

If the Giants select a quarterback at the top of the draft, the clock officially starts ticking on their time in New York. Should the rookie signal-caller pan out, then Schoen and Daboll will be secure in their jobs long-term.

Meanwhile, missing on a quarterback at the top of the draft would mean yet another regime may be on its way out the door. Drafting a quarterback like McCarthy would signal that the Giants love the quarterback as the general manager could likely wait one more year to pick a quarterback given that John Mara wants to keep Jones.
