Spring Training has just begun for the New York Mets in St. Lucie County, Florida, with pitchers and catchers practicing on Wednesday. However, the Mets have made one roster move for the 2024 season.

New York officially announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Shintaro Fujinami to a one-year deal and put 22-year-old infielder Ronny Mauricio on the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

Mauricio made his highly anticipated major league debut in September after he played well in the minor leagues. The young infielder only hit .248 with two home runs and nine RBI in 108 plate appearances with the Mets (28 games). Mauricio also recorded seven stolen bases and wasn’t caught once.

The Mets had big plans for the young fielder for the 2024 season, but he suffered a torn ACL in December in winter ball. Mets president of baseball operations David Sterns spoke to the media earlier this week, stating Mauricio is “still at the early stages of rehab." (h/t Ben Krimmel of SNY.tv)

Mauricio likely would’ve competed for the starting third base job if he didn’t get hurt this winter despite only playing five major league games last season at the hot corner. The Mets will hope that the 22-year-old can bounce back and be ready either later this season or the 2025 season.
