The New York Giants have revealed a historical change that will take place this season.

It was announced they are planning to un-retire their No. 1 jersey and give it to rookie Malik Nabers. The number was previously worn by the late Ray Flaherty, who was the first player to have his number retired in 1935. His family gave New York the green light for Nabers to wear his number this season.

In addition, this marks Nabers' second number change. The Giants' No. 6 pick originally wore No. 8 at LSU before switching to No. 9 in the Big Blue uniform. After all, the rookie has worked hard enough to get this number given to him. Nabers will make his anticipated season debut on Sept. 7 when the Giants host the Minnesota Vikings to kick off the 2024 season.

Nabers was thrilled to get the clearance to don this number and gave love to the Flaherty family. He said," Thank you to the Flaherty family for allowing me to wear Number 1 for the New York Giants. I understand the responsibility, and I will do everything in my power to honor the Flaherty family and this organization. I will wear the number with great pride. I can't wait to start the season."

As for Flaherty, he was a three-time All-Pro for the Giants, leading the NFL in receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, yards per reception, and yards per game in 1932. He led the Giants to an NFL Championship in 1934.

After wrapping up his playing career, Flaherty decided to become a coach. He would manage a Boston/Washington Redskins team as well as the New York Yankees and Chicago Hornets. Flaherty had earned himself two championships during his time with Washington that went from 1936 to 1949. 27 years later, he would find himself inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the class of 1976.
