Jets Week 1 Loss Paints Clear Picture on Haason Reddick's Impact
By Colin Chatto
A major overreaction, or too early to tell? That is what the Jets are facing following Monday night's loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Given Aaron Rodgers' history in the early part of the regular season, it is hard to overreact, especially against an NFC juggernaut like the 49ers. However, the defensive effort on Monday night is a slight concern heading into Week 2 after the Jets missed critical opportunities on third down to get off the field and consistently got gashed in the run game.
Haason Reddick continues to hold on strongly to his word waiting to be paid and has every right. The 49ers rushed for a total of 180 yards and nearly doubled the time of possession, but the biggest issue was the inability to get off the field in crucial spots.
The Jets managed to have a better third-down efficiency percentage, per NFL.com but it just felt like whenever they had to get a stop, they were unable to do so. Sure, the early turnovers did not help the case and the defense was out on the field longer than they should have been, but the pass rush was not there to force Brock Purdy to make quick decisions.
Even the best defenses in the league have hiccups, especially during the first part of the season, but without a solidified pass rush, it is going to be difficult for the Jets to get past the teams they are competing with in the AFC.
The production from Quinnen Williams and Quincy Williams will eventually show, but after Week 1, it is certain that Haason Reddick can immediately impact the Jets defensive front. The ball is now in Jets GM Joe Douglas' court, putting him in a difficult spot to see if he will really stick true to his word.
