The Jets season was instantly derailed once Aaron Rodgers suffered an Achilles injury due to the team's lack of a reliable backup quarterback. The team used Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle, and Trevor Semien with none of the quarterbacks catching on.

The Jets didn't have to look far to fix that issue, stealing their new backup away from the crosstown rival New York Giants.

Tyrod Taylor appeared in eleven games for the Giants in 2023 passing for 1,341 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. The main concern for the Jets with Taylor as the backup will be his injury history of missing time in his two seasons with the Giants due to injuries. The concussions will be another concern as Taylor has suffered four concussions in his last six seasons in the league.

If Aaron Rodgers goes down the Jets' ceiling will drop significantly however, their season won't be totally derailed as it was in 2023. The Giants offense was better at times with Tyrod Taylor than it had been with Daniel Jones. Taylor will be able to step in and run Nathaniel Hackett's offense better than the backups have in the past.

The signing of Taylor likely officially signals the end of Zach Wilson's time in New York. Wilson once had serious promise as the Jets quarterback of the future however, turnovers have severely slowed the development of Wilson. The Jets gave Wilson permission to seek a trade however, after the market for Mac Jones wasn't there the Jets may just end up releasing the former second overall pick.

Taylor Was an Important Move for the New York Jets

The New York Jets significantly needed to add a veteran back-up this off-season and they may have landed the best one in Tyrod Taylor. Taylor has served as a backup to Baker Mayfield, Justin Herbert, Joe Flacco, and Daniel Jones in his time in the NFL. Taylor also won't need focused snaps towards his development as Zach Wilson did this past off-season allowing the sole focus to lie on Aaron Rodgers.
