Insider Reveals Why Yankees Fans Shouldn't Expect a Blake Snell Signing
The New York Yankees are down in Tampa, Fla. for Spring Training as they prepare for the 2024 MLB season. They have made a flurry of moves over the offseason and they could still be in the market for pitching.
New York has been linked to the reigning NL CY Young winner Blake Snell over the past few months. In 2023, Snell went 14-9 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP while being tied for third in the majors in strikeouts (234). That season was just the second time in his career that he notched 30-plus starts and north of 130 innings.
The Yankees are looking to add more pitching to their staff but talks have reportedly stalled between New York and Snell. Andy Martino and Bryan Hoch of the New York Post Sports are down in Florida and reported on the situation between these two sides.
Martino said, "Despite the continued linkage between the sides...there hasn't been any momentum on this front since the Yankees pulled their offer prior to signing Marcus Stroman."
Hoch gave more context into why the sides haven't agreed to a deal. He stated, "They're over the competitive balance tax, that they're being taxed at 110%. Let me put this in kind of layman's terms... If I'm going to buy a car for $30,000 and that tax on the car automatically makes it $63,000, I'm gonna have some hesitation."
That makes it more difficult to strike a deal. Especially since Snell is looking to cash in on a nine-figure payday. Who knows if either side will cave in but things are looking murky at the moment.
