Luis Severino is quickly writing his own New York redemption arc.

There have been numerous players who’ve played for both the New York Mets and New York Yankees, but it’s hard to remember a player who’s left one squad at rock bottom and rebuilt their confidence in the other borough.

“For me, getting here, getting to know everybody, this is definitely just a little bit, I would say, more calm when you come here," Severino told reporters prior to the June portion of the Subway series. "I don't know if it's because nobody is expecting us to win this year, there's a little bit less pressure for us. It's like, come here, just win games and we'll see at the end of the year what's going to happen. But, you know, it's the Yankees, everybody knows we're the Yankees and we had to go out there and play because we were going to win the division."

After posting an abysmal 6.65 ERA in 2023 as a Yankee, Severino has bounced back with a 3.42 ERA and 3.98 through his first 16 games as a member of the 2024 New York Mets. While the righty has not been perfect, he’s shown qualities that suggest his new home has been a good fit.

How Luis Severino is Having a Bounce-Back Season with the Mets

Across 19 games in 2023, Severino ranked in the 4th percentile in fastball run value and the 13th percentile in barrel%. He’s improved upon those marks this season. The veteran is currently in the 94th percentile in fastball run value and the 85th percentile in barrel%.

While these are only two advanced stats that could show why Severino has been solid, they uniquely indicate areas of improvement. His improved fastball run hints at a pitcher who has once again found confidence in his primary pitch. For most starters, having a decent fastball is a baseline ability that can be used as a major jumping-off point. Further, the fact that Severino has been missing barrels indicates that his off-speed stuff has worked well in conjunction with a solid fastball.

Obviously, the Dominican-born pitcher has still experienced ups and downs with the Mets, but none of Luis Severino’s less-than-stellar 2024 highlights have come close to what was a catastrophic end to his time with the Yankees.

For a player that the Mets acquired with a leap, things have worked out well.
