Giants on Verge of Reuniting With Veteran Defender After Roster Cuts

Could the Giants finally have their answer at CB2? The second cornerback position has been up for grabs all offseason, but reuniting with this veteran to fill the role may be exactly what the Giants need to do ahead of the 2024 season.

The New York Giants have been looking for a second cornerback all offseason to play opposite second-year defensive back Deonte Banks. Many believed Big Blue would pursue a veteran like Stephon Gilmore, Tre’Davious White, or Darious Williams in free agency to lock down the starting job.

However, when the 53-man roster was released, the Giants kept just three cornerbacks, which left fans wondering what their secondary would look like in 2024. Based on Friday's news on a potential reunion, the picture is becoming more clear.

Currently, the three Giants cornerbacks rostered are Banks, Tre Hawkins III, and Cor'Dale Flott, who is a projected starter on the team's depth chart after beating out Nick McCloud in training camp. With Flott coming off a quad injury, which could be a lingering concern, the Giants signed McCloud to the Giants' practice squad as insurance, but neither are viable options for Shane Bowen's defense.

When the Giants finalized their 53-man roster on Tuesday, Darnay Holmes was not listed. Holmes had been with the organization for the last four years, had shown promise, and looked like a candidate for eventually getting starting opportunities. The Giants' 2020 fourth-round pick ended up getting cut by the Giants and signing with the Las Vegas Raiders.

With Holmes no longer in NY and the team extremely weak at the position, many wondered if Joe Schoen had one more move up his sleeve to add much-needed depth at cornerback before next Sunday, and it appears he is working on something. The Giants are hosting veteran defensive back Adoree Jackson for a visit on Friday, which means the team could fill the CB2 role by the end of the day as soon as possible.

Giants Nearing Reunion With CB Adoree' Jackson

Jackson has played with the Giants for the last three seasons and mentored Banks last year. With his previous three-year contract expiring at the end of the 2023 season, the Giants did not initially offer Jackson an extension; however, with the veteran still unsigned and the team desperate for a CB2, it makes sense that both sides reunite.

Before playing in New York, Jackson was a member of the Tennessee Titans, which means he crossed paths with the Giants' new defensive coordinator, Bowen, in 2020. While Bowen didn't necessarily work directly with Jackson during their time together in Nashville, as he was the outside linebackers coach, the existing relationship could be another reason to give the veteran a call.

Jackson's experience playing for the Giants for the last three seasons makes this the perfect move for both sides. In his three seasons with the Giants, the veteran appeared in 37 games, starting 36. Jackson recorded two interceptions (one for a touchdown), 23 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and 176 tackles.

The 28-year-old has become a fan favorite among the Giants faithful, and the fans would welcome a reunion with Jackson with open arms. With the Giants' depleted secondary looking the way it is at the moment and the season just a week away, Schoen should make the call and bring back Jackson for the 2024 season.
