Giants Should Steal This Free Agent Away From the Cowboys
By Cem Yolbulan
The New York Giants have been one of the busiest teams in the offseason, radically transforming their roster. They lost two big-name players in Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney, but also pulled off a blockbuster trade to acquire Brian Burns from the Panthers and bolstered the offensive line with free-agent signings.
All these transactions took up most of the Giants' cap space. They currently have a little over $6 million left to spend, but cap space can easily be created in the NFL when needed.
It is safe to say, however, that the Giants don't have a blockbuster signing left in them. It's not like there are too many high-profile names left on the market anyway.
Yet, there is one player still available that would not only benefit the Giants immensely if signed, but also would hurt an NFC East rival: Stephon Gilmore of the Dallas Cowboys.
Giants Dream FA Target Stephon Gilmore is Still Highly Effective
Gilmore spent the last season with the Cowboys and continued to be a highly effective defender. At age 33, he played every game, 94% of snaps, and only allowed 55.8% completion on passes when targeted. He registered two interceptions, 13 passes defended, and a career-high 68 tackles.
The Cowboys, with an abundance of elite cornerbacks on the team, are taking their time to re-sign the veteran. The former NFL Defensive Player of the Year would be an excellent addition for the Giants who could use another corner to play opposite Deonte Banks and mentor him.
Despite the busy free agency, the Giants are still the biggest underdogs in the NFC East to win the division. At +975, they are considered a very long shot while the Cowboys are favored at +115.
