Giants Make Perfect Low-Risk Signing With Former Pro Bowl Receiver
The New York Giants have made a great signing by adding veteran wide receiver Allen Robinson II on a one year deal.
Robinson has had a terrific NFL career, with 7,028 yards and 43 touchdowns in 127 games played. The issue has been the massive dip in production the past three seasons, as Robinson has recorded just 1,029 yards with the Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers in that time.
In defense of Robinson, his quarterback situations in his final season with the Bears and with the Steelers were both less than ideal, while he wasn't exactly a scheme with the Rams. The difficult counterpoint is that Robinson won't have great quarterback play with Daniel Jones, and that he's more of a contested-catch type receiver who excels on 50-50 balls, which worked out horribly when the Giants signed Kenny Golladay.
The New York Giants will now add an extremely talented veteran receiver to a younger group of wide receivers. The move may also open the door for Joe Schoen to move on from Darius Slayton who's currently holding out in hopes of a new contract.
The Giants have invested a significant amount of assets into Malik Nabers, Wan'Dale Robinson, and Jalin Hyatt which makes either Slayton or Robinson the odd man out. The positive for the Giants is that if Robinson doesn't work out they can cut bait easily as it's a small one-year contract. That's in stark contrast to the Golladay contract.
Giants Have Most Talented WR Group of Daniel Jones' Career
The New York Giants have formed what may be the best group of weapons that Daniel Jones has ever had through the draft and free agency. Malik Nabers has a chance to be the best receiver Jones has ever had while young weapons like Theo Johnson and Tyrone Tracy Jr. could make an impact in year one. Like Jones, his weapons have a ton to prove. But if they all develop in the right direction we could see this Giants team return to playoff form.
