Giants Fans Will See What Could've Been in Week 2 vs. Commanders
The start of the season feels like Groundhog Day as the Giants once again seem like a team with no hope of competing despite a ton of moves made this offseason. New York traded for Brian Burns, drafted Malik Nabers, and rebuilt this offensive line, giving fans a ton of optimism.
Unquestionably, however, the biggest area where nothing changed is at quarterback, as the Giants decided to run it back once again with Daniel Jones and no real backup option to turn to. We're now in year six of Daniel Jones, a crazy notion given the fact that fans have known he isn't the right guy for years now.
Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll had no real way to solve the Giants' issues at quarterback this offseason. The free agent class didn't have any solid options that they could afford, so the team signed journeyman Drew Lock. With the sixth pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, they were too far back to land one of the top signal callers yet too high in the draft to take Michael Penix or JJ McCarthy.
The Giants fell out of the race for one of the top quarterbacks due to several factors. For starters, despite Joe Schoen seemingly showing no interest in re-signing Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney, he ultimately lost them for nothing in free agency instead of recouping value in a trade.
Barkley helped the Giants win meaningless games against the Commanders, Patriots, Packers, and Eagles, ironically playing a big part in the Giants falling down from a top pick to the sixth. The same could be said about Xavier McKinney, who had a massive second half to earn one of the biggest deals ever for a safety.
If the Giants just lost to the Eagles and Packers, who were clearly better teams than the Giants, they would've jumped the Titans and Chargers while a loss to the Commanders would've landed the Giants or Patriots would've helped in the race for a quarterback.
We saw in the offseason edition of Hard Knocks how much Brian Daboll loved Jayden Daniels and if the Giants could've landed a quarterback, it's likely they would've taken Daniels.
This weekend, while Giants fans are miserable watching the same story we've seen for the last six years, Commanders fans will feel elated. New York fans will be hoping that Daniel Jones puts up a performance worth watching past the first half, while Commanders fans will be overjoyed watching Jayden Daniels.
Prepare for a ton of Joe Schoen on the road
As the College Football season continues to build towards its biggest games of the season, Joe Schoen will be racking up frequent flyer miles. This next draft will be the biggest of Schoen's career if he's allowed to make the selection as he must land a star quarterback or he'll likely be fired. The Daniel Jones era is clearly ending this offseason which is for the best, but Schoen needs to give the Giants fans something to believe in.
