Giants 'Lock In' on Drew Lock to Beef Up QB Room
Free agency has been a whirlwind of unexpected developments thus far. Saquon Barkley's move to Philadelphia and the trade for Brian Burns highlight two of the biggest New York Giants-releated deals so far.
On Tuesday the Giants also made a notable signing, inking QB Drew Lock to occupy a backup position. Lock, a 2019 second-round selection from Missouri, has a record of 9 wins and 14 losses across 23 career starts.
He made 21 starts during his initial three seasons with the Broncos, but has seen limited action with just one start over the past two seasons while with the Seahawks.
Given the uncertainties surrounding Daniel Jones for the upcoming season, the Giants find themselves in a critical position to support around their starting quarterback.
“The reality is he’s coming off three injuries in two years,” Giants GM Joe Schoen said. “That’s facts. It’s something we’ve gotta consider. We’re gonna address it through free agency and if there’s an opportunity in the draft — we’re gonna look at every position, not only quarterback because we do have needs across the roster.”
Recent rumors suggest that New York may pursue a quarterback position in the upcoming draft. If this speculation comes to fruition, it raises questions about the long-term future of Lock.
The Giants have the No. 6 pick in the first round of the draft, presenting a prime opportunity to secure a talented quarterback. However, competition is fierce with the top three picks also going for quarterbacks, complicating the decision-making process for the G-Men.
If the Giants fail to find success with their draft picks and Jones doesn't recover efficiently in time, Lock could potentially step into the role of Big Blue's starting quarterback for the 2024 season with backup support from Tommy DeVito.
